Israel has responded to the Egyptian football team manager’s comments of support for Gaza by murdering Palestinian Mohamed Fawaz al-Wahidi — Egypt’s organiser of World Cup match screenings in Gaza. The 7 July 2026 murder came just before Egypt’s match against Argentina, where many believe the Egyptians were cheated out of a historic win. FIFA clears VAR official of racism after concern over hand gesture

A few seconds of television coverage during the 2026 FIFA World Cup turned into an issue that sparked widespread controversy in sporting and media circles. Australian VAR official Sean Evans was seen making a controversial hand gesture ahead of the match between Germany and Curaçao.
