Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has joined the Green party’s leader and deputy leader in speaking out against the move by Lloyds bank to ‘debank’ the Canary. The bank seized the cash and closed the account without explanation why it has disappeared a significant amount of money. Money that is needed to pay the outlet’s staff, contractors and operating costs.
Jeremy Corbyn — Dangerous road
Corbyn told the Canary that the anti-democratic attempt to silence an independent news site was “a very dangerous road”:
We are going down a very dangerous road in this country. Independent media is essential to a healthy democracy. This decision, which has been made without any explanation whatsoever, is extremely alarming, and sets a very dangerous precedent for press freedom in Britain.

The pair join Green party leader in decrying the establishment’s contempt for democracy, free speech and freedom of the press:
Independent media companies, activists and the public — even some right-wing figures and groups, including the US White House — have condemned the move as the threat to all of us that it is. But most politicians, so far, remain silent. The UK is not a democracy when its political class is so craven and its journalists are attacked for speaking the truth.
