Hackney votes to end 58-year Haifa twinning, citing “anti-racist values”

Hackney’s Green Party-led Council has voted to end its 58-year-old twin-city agreement with Haifa, a port city that “Israel” violently captured in 1948. Councillors have upheld the vote as a commitment in their May 2026 local elections manifesto. They have pledged to end the twinning arrangement at “the earliest possible opportunity,” the details of which are under consideration. Hackney Greens look to keep momentum going in two by-elections

Perhaps the biggest Green wave in the 2026 local elections was in the London borough of Hackney. And ahead of two local by-elections on 25 June, Greens are hoping to keep that momentum going. Ahead of May’s elections in Hackney, collaboration between Greens and local independent socialists built a cooperative spirit from early on.
