The past week has been far from proud for employers at the UK’s major galleries and museums. Fortunately, however, the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) has been on hand to stand up for the workers. The union is balloting workers at the V&A Museum over potential strike action relating to pay, conditions and dignity at work. However, museum director, Tristram Hunt, has refused to come to the negotiating table, leaving workers feeling “completely disrespected”. Thames Water is facing fury from parliament after handing its finance chief a £1m “signing-on fee” last month. Company chairman Adrian Montague argued that such massive payments are a “necessary incentive” for staff retention. The news of the bonus is particularly outrageous given that the company is currently drowning in some £20 billion debt. On Thursday 6 August, police in Thetford, Norfolk imposed ‘public safety measures’ after a crowd tried to break into a property they believed housed asylum seekers. Yesterday, 5 August, Professor Jason Arday resigned from his Sociology post at University of Cambridge and Jesus College. When he took the job back in 2023, he became the youngest Black professor ever to teach at the institution. However, since that point, accusations of plagiarism have dogged his work. Several things seem true at once here. Black academia is under serious threat right now, in the UK, the US and elsewhere. Hackers have stolen huge amounts of personal data from the Department for Education (DfE) and the Police National Legal Database (PNLD), exposing sensitive details online. The attack reportedly targeted 14 other institutions, with a UK university being among them. Both the DfE and PNLD have reported the breach to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). The cybercriminal group claiming responsibility calls itself the ExfilSquad. The group, virtually unheard of before the attack, posted sections of the stolen data, including the names and addresses of parents and staff,  on a leak website as proof. The Human Rights Network has added its voice to the growing number of advocacy organisations and watchdogs which have denounced Home Office plans to use AI facial-recognition software to assess the age of asylum-seeking children.
