Today the UK government has confirmed it will implement a long-anticipated ban on social media use for under-16s in the UK. As Maddison Wheeldon wrote for the Canary, this move does little for young people while letting big tech companies off the hook. And girls’ rights charity Plan International UK has added that the ban won’t keep girls safe. Because it fails to tackle the underlying causes of misogyny online. Morgan Griffith-David is senior influencing lead for UK Girls’ Rights at Plan International UK. Reacting to the confirmation of the ban on under-16s using social media in the UK, he said:…

A car-sized Pret chicken wrap with a whole “frankenchicken” stuffed inside, feathers and all, has appeared outside Pret A Manger in Oxford Circus. It marks the start of animal welfare charity Anima’s week-long tour of 15 Pret cafés throughout the city. Pret is the target of a £1m public campaign as a response to the high-end café chain breaking its commitment to stop selling fast-growing chickens by 2026. In 2018 Pret promised to stop selling fast-growing chickens by this year. It has now delayed that to 2032 and not switched a single bird to a slower growing breed. Connor Jackson, chief…

On Monday 15 June, the Spycops inquiry resumes and campaigners will be looking for answers. Tranche 3 Phase 3 of the Undercover Policing Inquiry (UCPI) is beginning. And it’ll be a crucial stage in the investigation into the Metropolitan police’s Special Demonstration Squad (SDS). The Inquiry has heard evidence from former undercover officers and many of those whose groups, campaigns and personal lives they infiltrated. It’s now turning its attention to the senior officers and government departments who authorised, supervised and oversaw these operations. For many of those affected, this phase goes to the heart of the Inquiry. The key question…

Three in four consumers wrongly believe cage chickens are a thing of the past

Vegan campaign group Viva! says its latest survey reveals a major transparency problem within the UK egg industry, as the government mulls over a potential cage ban. Underpinning this statement is an eye-opening statistic. Almost three-quarters (74%) of UK shoppers are unaware that ‘enriched’ colony cages are used in the UK. Katie Robinson, campaigns manager at Viva!, explains: We asked 2,000 members of the public a simple question. And in doing so we’ve highlighted a deeply worrying disconnect between what consumers believe to be true and the realities of animal farming. Brits consume 14.5bn eggs a year, yet most have no…

Unite — Sharon Graham’s call for looser fiscal rules to fund military spending was slammed by Stop the War’s officer, Shabbir Lakha. Graham was mourning the resignation of John Healey as defence secretary, who resigned citing Starmer and his chancellor, Rachel Reeves, as not ‘serious’ enough about spending huge amounts of our money on military build-up. Lakha pointed out that the government is already cutting 1% of all capital budgets to pay for this defence hike, and that Healey resigned to demand even more. He slammed her, as the leader of one of the biggest unions in the country, for actively…

London mayor Sadiq Khan has condemned the Great Israeli Real Estate event, scheduled for Sunday 14 June in London. This came in response to a question from Green Party leader and London Assembly member Zack Polanski at Mayor’s Question Time. The event promotes the sale of land in illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli property sector is trying to make inroads in the western market. Actress and questionable ‘wellness’ advocate Gwyneth Paltrow has recently sold her face to developers. Polanski said: It is morally incomprehensible and unconscionable that this event is scheduled to take place in our city…

Mexico World Cup opener turns political

The first game of the 2026 World Cup, held in Mexico, was notable for reasons other than Donald Trump’s racist authoritarianism. The vomit-inducing bootlicking and double standards of FIFA boss Gianni Infantino didn’t go unnoticed, and Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum’s refusal to attend made headlines. Sheinbaum reportedly gave her ticket to a young Indigenous woman and watched Mexico’s victory over South Africa at a sports centre “in the company of the people.” President Sheinbaum TURNED DOWN her World Cup ticket over the ridiculous prices, choosing to gift it away and watch Mexico's victory with the people at a free local screening…

Torcuil Crichton MP, the Labour MP for the Western Isles, has hit back at campaigners opposing the annual guga hunt. He accused protesters of “attention-seeking behaviour” and “virtue-signalling”. In response, campaigners accused Crichton of “dismissive and belittling rhetoric”, saying he’s: lost sight of the views of his constituents. The spat comes as Scotland’s nature agency received a licence application for the guga hunt this year. The 10 man hunting team based in Ness, Isle of Lewis is seeking NatureScot’s permission to kill gannet chicks on the island of Sula Sgeir. The birds, still too young to fly, are removed from their…

Two leading animal welfare organisations are calling on the new Scottish parliament to end the annual guga hunt on Sula Sgeir. They’ve published a new report stating that the hunt cannot be considered humane, despite a NatureScot licence condition that requires killing must be carried out humanely. This adds to the campaigning work of Protect the Wild, whose founder Rob Pownall ran for the Scottish parliament dressed as a gannet. Animal Welfare and the Guga Hunt comes out as NatureScot considers a fresh licence application for the 2026 hunt. The topic is also due to for consideration by the Scottish parliament…

Vape deposit scheme could recover £6.3m worth of lithium and copper annually

  • Post author:

Despite 2025’s disposable vape ban, 6.3m vapes and pods still get chucked away every week in the UK. This has prompted fresh calls for a deposit return scheme for vaping products. Disposable vapes are an example of a product that creates a lucrative market with no apparent thought for the environmental cost. Each unit includes plastic for the casing, copper wiring in the circuitry and lithium in the battery. While the ban on disposable vapes has helped to reduce the number purchased per week, with a 31% reduction, 6.3m vapes and pods are still being binned each week. Alongside this, reports…

A judge is expected to sentence four Palestine Action activists as ‘terrorists’ on 12 June, despite the activists not being convicted as such. Judge Jeremy Johnson has indicated he may add a ‘terrorist connection’ to the charges of Charlotte Head, Samuel Corner, Leona (Ellie) Kamio and Fatema Rajwani under section 69 of the Sentencing Act 2020. This is despite the jury convicting the Palestine Action four of criminal damage in their retrial. Genocidal terrorist Ben-Gvir suggests kidnapping Lebanese women and children

  • Post author:

Itamar Ben-Gvir, a genocidal terrorist and Israeli Minister of National Security, has suggested that Israel kidnap Lebanese women and children to “break Hezbollah’s morale”. That’s right, after he spent two years pleading with the world to help release the Israeli hostages and using it to justify carpet-bombing Gaza, Ben-Gvir now wants Israel to take even more hostages than it already has in its prisons. By his own standards, that gives Lebanon the right to flatten the whole of Israel. During a security cabinet meeting, where several officials backed escalating its illegal attacks in Lebanon, Ben-Gvir said: Let’s start thinking outside the…
