Father and son shot by Israeli forces as settlers overrun Hebron

The Palestinian city of Hebron has been the target of another Israeli military excursion. Occupation personnel flooded into the Old City to roll out the proverbial red carpet for “settlers tours” in the southern West Bank city — a coloniser gathering held on Shabbat that compounds the terror Palestinian residents experience in Hebron, one of the most heated fronts of colonial settler violence. Israeli military presence is not incidental. It safeguards setters, offering them a carte blanche to overrun indigenous Palestinian territories. With the military on their side, they are answerable to neither local nor international law, acting with repugnant impunity.…

Why liberals keep mistaking left-wing populism for selfishness

Left-wing politicians, like Zohran Mamdani, Abdul El-Sayed and (to an extent) Andy Burnham, have found recent success by taking a fresh angle on selling their politics. The Economist, a stalwart institution of liberalism and opponent of leftism, refers to this new approach as “Gen-Z socialism”, which it characterises as a “me-first doctrine” embodying: a form of retail politics that appeals not to notions of the common good, as in prior waves of socialism, but to people’s narrow self-interest. The demands, according to the Economist, are: Lower my rent! Cut my bills! Give me free buses! It believes, furthermore, that this strain of leftism…

Why did Special Branch keep files on a socialist politician?

When Dave Nellist entered parliament in 1983 as the Labour MP for Coventry South East, he became one of Westminster’s best-known socialists.  He was seen as a workers’ MP on a worker’s wage, donating more than half his salary to left-wing causes.  But within a few years, he was embroiled in a bitter political dispute inside the Labour Party that ultimately led to his suspension and expulsion.  He was associated with the Marxist newspaper Militant and his support for the mass campaign of non-payment of the poll tax.  Now, more than 40 years later, one question remains unanswered: what did Britain’s…

The UK media has consistently mis-framed SAS war crimes allegations while marginalising the voices of alleged victims. That’s according to a new report by Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) which delves into how the press has responded to the ongoing scandal. The report looks at a wide range of media coverage — with the Canary getting a positive mention for our work. The study, titled ‘Witch hunts or war crimes? How the British media talks about allegations of SAS killings of civilians in Afghanistan‘, was published on 18 August. The Haddon-Cave inquiry into allegations of extrajudicial killings in Afghanistan at the…

CAGE International and 40 other organisations have signed a call for an immediate review of the convictions of the ‘Birmingham 4’. First arrested over 10 years ago, these four men were convicted of terrorism offences back in 2017. The courts sentenced Naweed Ali, Khobaib Hussain, Mohibur Rahman and Tahir Aziz to life in prison following a joint undercover operation by MI5 and West Midlands Police. However, all four men and their legal teams have maintained their innocence throughout. Now, the 41 organisations have highlighted serious concerns, including: allegations of evidence being improperly introduced, police being in contempt of court during the…

Filton 24 — Lawyers have issued a statement on behalf of barrister Rajiv Menon KC about the contempt of court proceedings brought against Menon by intelligence service-aligned judge Jeremy Johnson. Johnson is pursuing Menon for the closing speech he gave to the jury in defence of his client, Filton 24 defendant Charlotte Head. Menon went public for the first time this week about the charges, giving an interview to news website Democracy Now. Lawyers want to remind the public that Menon denies any wrongdoing, but is currently in a phase of the case for technical challenges rather than direct argument on the…
