A senator in Paraguay, Celeste Amarilla, is set to face criminal charges in a case levelled by the French Football Federation (FFF). In recent racist comments aimed at France’s Kylian Mbappé, she called him a:
colonised Cameroonian, desperately trying to pass himself off as French
Adding he is a:
brute who had not learned to write
Captain of the France World Cup team, Mbappé gave a damning response to her racist hate:
Madame Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position.
You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honour throughout the competition.
FFF STATEMENT:
The racist remarks made by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla targeting Kylian Mbappé are utterly abhorrent and unacceptable. How can anyone make such comments? These remarks are criminal and deserve condemnation. They must be prosecuted, here and elsewhere. The… pic.twitter.com/qA6FprsZ3O

Amarilla: “Instead of breastmilk, he grew up sucking on coconuts”
Amarilla’s vile post was a classic example of an immature, pathetic human being who cannot accept losing, and instead turns to dehumanising and ‘othering’ people to seemingly make herself feel better.
Her full racist, despicable public tantrum went as follows:
This brute hasn’t even learned to write. Instead of breastmilk, he grew up sucking on coconuts, and the most educated creatures he ever heard were chimpanzees.
You should’ve given him the middle finger, Orlando Gill (Paraguay GK).
A colonized Cameroonian, pretending to be French, resentful, newly rich, arrogant, and ugly.
He was nervous and scared to death all game, like his whole team. They didn’t even manage to score a single goal, until they got lucky with a penalty.
The only thing many of us blame the team for is not giving him a full-handed slap at the end of the game. I’m not even a football fan.
This has enraged people across the world, and Mbappé wasn’t having any of it. He powerfully finished his rebuke to Amarilla saying:
Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country.
I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world.

Amarilla has ‘attempted’ to apologise – and instead, played the victim
The FFF statement is definitely not holding anything back in exposing how grossly offensive and frankly, criminal Amarilla’s derogatory abuse is:
The racist remarks made by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla targeting Kylian Mbappé are utterly abhorrent and unacceptable. How can anyone make such comments? These remarks are criminal and deserve condemnation.
They must be prosecuted, here and elsewhere. The FFF is referring the matter to the public prosecutor’s office with a view to legal proceedings.
The Federation offers its full support to its captain, its players and, more broadly, to all victims of such hateful remarks. More than ever, the FFF remains committed to fighting racism and all forms of discrimination.
These comments bring shame on those who make them and those who spread them. The players of the French national team represent France, it is our country that has been insulted.

She has since come out and apologised – but ‘apology’ isn’t quite the descriptor. Instead, it seemed she felt entitled to act as if, despite being the instigator, she is in fact the victim.
A very Trumpian move, it must be said!
– Blamed Mbappe
– claimed “gender violence”
– demanded an apology for her racism being called out
-wasn’t racist but “regretted having mistreated you with the same insults I receive for I too am despised for being dark-skinned” @CelesteSenadora worst apology ever?https://t.co/GVItCYALLK

France’s captain, in contrast to the ‘sore-loser’ politician in Paraguay, has shown a commendable amount of respect and decency to the opposition team, despite facing quite a bit of unnecessary behaviour from their players.
Amarilla could learn a thing or two about what it means to rise above hate, judgement and conflict:
What was wrong with Paraguay players

Her own government has condemned her racism
The government of the Republic of Paraguay has rejected the malicious statement from Amarilla, stating it is committed to:
the fight against racism, xenophobia, intolerance, and every form of hatred and discrimination.
Adding that it:
reiterates its respect for the French people, with whom Paraguay maintains a historic relationship of friendship, cooperation, and mutual understanding.
As a result, Amarilla is facing growing isolation and widespread criticism for remarks that belong centuries in the past.
Even worse, these comments come at a time where fascism is rising, and anti-immigrant racist hate is rising, which make her comments all the more disgusting and devastatingly negligent.
Our solidarity is with Mbappé and the FFF in being unafraid to call a spade a spade – or in this case, a racist a racist.
