New research shows at least 3.3 million suffered under Dutch slavery

Dutch investigative journalist Leendert van der Valk has revealed that the minimum number of people enslaved by the Netherlands in the transatlantic slavery system is a shocking 3.3 million. The figure is five times higher than the previous number of 600,000 commonly cited in the country. That’s the low-end estimate – he said Dutch slavers may have stolen the freedom of up to 5.3 million people. New research highlights the challenges entrenched into the daily lives of UK girls

One in five girls say they first experienced unwanted physical or sexual harassment before age 12. That’s the finding of new research from girls’ rights charity Plan International UK. It sits alongside another recent report, which focussed on the pervasive impact of online misogyny. Opinium Research polled 1,000 nationally representative girls and women in the UK aged 16-24. The findings highlight the vast majority (87%) have received unwanted comments about their appearance, such as catcalling and intrusive remarks.
