Amnesty International label ruinous Italy-Albania migrant detention pact β€œa wake-up call”

Amnesty International have released a statement claiming that Italy’s agreement to detain migrants and asylum seekers in Albania is a danger to people’s “safety, liberty and human rights”. The campaign organisation also held that the pact: continue[s] to expose the dangers of long-standing European Union (EU) migration policies that centre on exclusion and containment. Evading responsibilities On 23 Februaryβ€―2024, the Italy-Albania Agreement established two Italian-run ‘migration facilities’ in Albania. The agreement will run for 5 years, with over €670β€―m earmarked to fund it. After that point, it will likely be renewed automatically. Activists confront Aviva Norwich HQ for insuring migrant detention and surveillance private contractors

On Friday 24 July 2026, from 8.00-9.00am, activists converged on Aviva’s historic Norwich headquarters. They were demanding the insurer severs ties with companies accused of human rights abuses against migrants and asylum seekers. They brought a 1.5m barbed wire ball surrounding Aviva’s logo, and spoke to hundreds of staff as they made their way to work. ICE agents attack protesters and Democrat senator supporting hunger striker at detention facility

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have attacked protesters outside of the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. Meanwhile, detainees inside the facility have staged a hunger strike against the inhumane conditions they’re subjected to. Attorneys have reported that around 300 detainees have joined the hunger-and-labor strike at Delaney Hall. The peaceful action began on 22 May, highlighting serious concerns including the spoiled food they’re expected to eat.
