NaVCIS logged 3424 HGV cargo crime incidents in 2025, nine a day across a network that has no dedicated police crime code for any of it. A driver parks a loaded curtainsider at a layby off the A5 because there is nowhere else to stop, and by morning the load is gone. The loss gets recorded as theft from a vehicle, the same category that covers a smashed car window in a supermarket car park. Mike Dawber, a NaVCIS field intelligence officer, put the direct cost at Β£65.1 million for the year. He also said the real figure would more likely…

US president Donald Trump’s much-hyped national guard deployments did nothing to lower crime rates. Canary readers will recall how Trump filled the streets of US cities with troops at the start of his second term. A major centre-left US thinktank has now debunked any claims that the military presence lowered crime. And what’s more, the whole project has ripped off taxpayers to the tune of billions. The Center for American Progress (CAP) warned in a new report: The second Trump administration is trying to take credit for the historic drop in violent crime across America despite the fact that this trend…

Domestic abuse β€” The National Crime Agency (NCA) has revealed that they have been investigating a “truly international network” of organised sexual abuse and assault in which drugs are used to sedate unwitting victims “often taking place over decades”. Helen Millichap, director of the National Centre for Violence Against Women and Girls and Public Protection, told the GuardianΒ these crimes are: rooted in domestic abuse, controlling and coercive behaviour and sexual offending. Adding that, whilst they are not a ‘new’ offence: the evolving profile reveals how the online and connected nature of the abuse is occurring, the dimensions are changing and therefore…

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) are reportedly not treating the incident as a hate crime. However, local Labour MP Yasmin Qureshi called out the clear Islamophobia at play. Sikh community leaders have spoken out against misleading reporting in the media which claimed that Vickrum Digwa murdered Henry Nowak using his kirpan, a knife carried as one of the five articles (paΓ±j kakkΔ“ or ‘five Ks’) of the Sikh faith. The community leaders also highlighted a “huge increase in hate crime” against Sikhs in the days around the trial, which concluded on 1 June.Β  During the trial at Southampton crown court, the prosecution recounted that Digwa was wearing a kirpan beneath his clothing. However, he was also carrying an 8-inch blade, with which he murdered Nowak. ‘Your actions have stirred…

What's wrong with performing your ablutions in a bucket and in front of your cell mate? What's wrong with emptying your own waste each morning? "Slop out, slop out", cried the screw in the corridor as he opened up the foul smelling cell to allow us to empty the offending mulch into the bog at the end of said corridor. Is this Victorian England? No, the prison is indeed Victorian, but the year is 1980 and this was the start to every day. I was doing my time for my crimes, and there it ends; if you can't do the time,…
