An Israeli influence operation named BlackCore allegedly sought to undermine left-wing politicians and shape elections in the UK and US. The Canary previously reported on a joint French/Israeli media investigation into the shadowy outfit. BlackCore is also accused of setting up a bogus Palestine charity. Now a French domestic security agency is investigating too. Israeli newspaper Haaretz and French outlet Libération reported on 11 June: Israeli firm BlackCore, suspected of interfering in France’s local elections in March, is also ‌suspected of meddling in elections in New York City and Scotland, and operating in Angola and Togo, the head of France’s disinformation detection…

The corporate lobbyists behind new defence secretary Dan Jarvis

  • Post author:
  • Post last modified:13 June 2026

New defence secretary Dan Jarvis has previously received around half a million pounds in donations from corporate lobbyists. So, as mainstream media outlets say the Labour right-winger “once looked like the future” and “is a fine choice“, let’s look into the dark money that’s been fuelling his political career. Jarvis and his local Labour Party in Barnsley have done such an awful job at countering Tory damage to the town in recent decades that it turned to Reform in the 2026 local elections. And when you look at where Jarvis’s funds come from, you can understand why the people of Barnsley…

DWP’s new AI jobcentre built a CV for a parrot, what will it force disabled people into?

Keir Starmer has launched the latest crap policy that he thinks will save his failing premiership: an AI jobcentre advisor – because that’s exactly what the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) need. DWP and AI needs to walk the plank The Prime Minister announced at London Tech Week that the DWP had developed the new ‘AI work assistant’. Starmer called the tool a ‘jobcentre in your pocket’ and said it would help unemployed people find work and help build them CVs. Science editor at The Times, Tom Whipple decided to give it a go, with a twist. He wrote on…

Magazine the New Internationalist, facing the possibility of being forced to cease publication, has launched an appeal to raise £150,000 by 7 July. The independent, cooperatively owned magazine celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023. The magazine said it was facing “the closest we have ever been to the lights going out for good,” explaining that costs have “soared” while readers are less able to pay. In addition, AI and algorithm changes have hit their website traffic, and that grants are “harder to come by” as funders have shifted priorities. It said:  Our information sphere is being rebuilt by tech oligarchs and far-right…

Liverpool open talks with Andoni Iraola as hunt for new head coach begins

  • Post author:
  • Post last modified:9 June 2026

Liverpool have entered formal discussions with Andoni Iraola over the vacant head coach role after Arne Slot’s dismissal, with the process being driven by sporting director Richard Hughes. The move marks a rapid attempt by the club to stabilise a dressing room and a playing identity that has felt unsettled since Slot’s departure. Liverpool: Iraola front-runner Iraola’s name rose quickly to the top of Liverpool’s shortlist because of a direct connection to Hughes. The sporting director brought him to Bournemouth in 2023 and watched the team flourish under his methods. That existing relationship gives Liverpool a rare shortcut in recruitment familiarity…

Reeves considers Blair-era PFIs to fund new towns

  • Post author:
  • Post last modified:9 June 2026

Rachel Reeves is reportedly considering resorting to yet-more disastrous Blair-era private finance initiatives (PFIs) to fund Labour’s national infrastructure schemes. The news, published in the Telegraph, comes after the Treasury commissioned the British Infrastructure Taskforce (BIT) to produce a research paper on the potential bonuses of a return to PFI schemes. The BIT is a grab-bag of private finance interests including Lloyds Banking, HSBC, Blackrock, Santander, Fidelity International and Phoenix Group. Completely unsurprisingly, the private financiers were huge fans of the idea of UK public services taking huge loans to pay for public services. The BIT heartily recommended the use of…

US Democratic Party Leader Chuck Schumer joined far-right Israeli Minister Bezalel Smotrich and other far-right Israeli lawmakers and American politicians in the annual Israel Day Parade in New York City over the weekend. Smotrich, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court,  is openly genocidal and has repeatedly called for Israel to completely ethnically cleanse all 1.8 million people from Gaza, so it can ‘be settled’. Smotrich also called to annex the entirety of the West Bank during a speech at a Jerusalem Day rally last month. Chuck Schumer is marching in NYC alongside a genocidal maniac wanted for war crimes…

Delegates included representatives of groups in London, Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham, Coventry, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Essex, North Devon, Dundee, Newcastle and Cumbria. Attendees said they’d comprehensively lost patience with Jeremy Corbyn and his close-knit entourage, who failed to build on the promise of the mass signups to a new party initiative in summer 2025. And the assembled members and ex members of Your Party agreed to create an initial federal organisation with the aim of…

“Vote in hope” – Greens announce Sarah Wakefield as new Makerfield candidate

  • Post author:
  • Post last modified:8 June 2026

The Green Party has announced Manchester councillor Sarah Wakefield as its new candidate for the Makerfield by-election. The announcement comes after the withdrawal of Chris Kennedy from the contest. Wakefield launched her campaign by calling on voters: Don’t vote in anger, vote in hope. There’s plenty to be angry about outside of Makerfield. From the sabotage of his own party by departing MP Josh Simons and his group, to the continued red-Tory policies of Labour under Starmer, to the racism of the Reform candidate. Voters have every right to be livid. But Wakefield is right that Makerfield needs hope. So does…

New York Mayor Mamdani successfully recovered $9m in unpaid fines from Amazon

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, alongside the City’s Commissioners in the Department of Finance (DOF) and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), has announced that his administration has managed to recover over $9m in previously unpaid fines. These fines came from idling violations committed by Bezos’ delivery vehicles and third-party contractors, and despite the Amazon’s $2 trillion valuation, the company has ignored them – until now. This serves as a timely reminder that authorities can hold dominant corporations accountable and make them pay up accordingly when political will exists. Amazon is worth $2 trillion. But it didn't deign to pay the…

Reform’s new overtime tax policy torn to shreds

  • Post author:
  • Post last modified:8 June 2026

Reform UK unveiled an attention-grabbing new policy proposal on Sunday 24 May: Reform will scrap income tax on overtime. It's time to make work pay. pic.twitter.com/Q0luvT9WPM — Nigel Farage MP (@Nigel_Farage) May 24, 2026 The problem for Reform is that the policy has also grabbed the attention of people who think things through. Reform — “Avoidance opportunities” Sam Dumitriu of the Britain Remade thinktank had 5 points on the new policy: 1. This appears to be an import of Trump’s extremely dumb (but clearly popular) ‘no tax on tips’ policy. 2. If your aim is to boost growth and incentivise work,…

Labour was wiped out in this month’s local elections. New EHRC guidance both clarifies and complicates the legal rights of trans people

  • Post author:
  • Post last modified:8 June 2026

There is a familiar refrain that follows my partner and I as we navigate the UK’s public bathrooms. As a gender-nonconforming couple, we’re painfully aware of the transphobic discourse that overshadows our daily lives. Approaching a set of bathrooms whilst out and about, and not wanting to draw more attention to ourselves, one or both of us will groan, before announcing with resignation: Time to do ‘gender’… It will be a situation familiar to many trans people. The so-called ‘bathroom ban’, fought for by anti-trans activists, has become notorious for making the lives of cis and trans people alike more complicated.…
