Police misogyny has filed women β€”Β But racism compounds these failures with fatal consequences

Police forces across the country have repeatedly failed to protect women and girls, with the Metropolitan Police frequently exposed as one of the worst offenders in allowing misogyny to persist within its ranks. These institutional failures do not simply undermine trust in policing; they compound the trauma experienced by victims and survivors of violence against women and girls. For Black women, however, the consequences of these failures can be even more devastating. When racism compounds an already entrenched culture of misogyny, discrimination and disbelief, it leaves Black women facing male violence more exposed and further denies them the protection, justice and…

Racism β€” Yesterday, 24 June, theΒ Canary reported on the publication of the damning Ockenden report. It detailed extensive failures in maternity and neonatal care under Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS trust. In particular, the report highlighted staff’s refusal to listen to patients’ concerns. The failure was even more prominent for global majority patients, along with those from other marginalised backgrounds. Today, we’re going to take a closer look at those issues, including the patients’ own accounts of their experiences. We should also note that the report took measures to ensure that it included the perspectives of people from marginalised and disadvantaged…

Islamophobia β€” The UK’s hierarchy of racism was clearly on display after the terror attacks in Edinburgh on 19 June, as an analysis of news coverage has shown. The Centre for Media Monitoring (CfMM) has previously called out the amount of anti-Muslim propaganda in the British media. And having now compared coverage of the Edinburgh attacks with coverage of the 29 April Golders Green attacks, it has found that the media is also underplaying terror attacks that target Muslims. Islamophobia β€” The UK’s racist media establishment The hierarchy of racism in the UK is particularly obvious on the right of the…

The scourge of online misogyny and racism fuels calls for regulation

A recent report by children’s charity Barnardo’s lays bare the scale of misogyny in the UK. Polling 4,000 young people, its shows how misogyny and targeted racism have flourished on social media platforms. As a result, the report found that these attitudes have dangerously become more ‘commonplace’ among offline. Against this backdrop, British PM Keir Starmer announced yesterday a social media ban will come into effect next year, restricting access for under-16s. Nevertheless, will still be able to circumvent the ban using VPNs. This means use of Snapchat, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X, by young people will likely continue. Lauren…

FIFA clears VAR official of racism after concern over hand gesture

A few seconds of television coverage during the 2026 FIFA World Cup turned into an issue that sparked widespread controversy in sporting and media circles. Australian VAR official Sean Evans was seen making a controversial hand gesture ahead of the match between Germany and CuraΓ§ao. As the Canary previously reported, Evans was seen to have: briefly formed an β€œOK” gesture with his right hand near his leg, a symbol that has beenΒ co‑opted by white extremist groups.Β  The gesture was quick, but it was enough to trigger immediate concern from FIFA’s anti‑discrimination unit, which monitors all matches for offensive behaviour. The monitor…

Shadow equalities minister wants any explanation other than racism for Black maternal deaths

  • Post author:

Shadow Equalities Minister Claire Coutinho has suggested that we need to be “clear-eyed” when considering the issue of Black maternal deaths. Apparently, ‘the left’ (and also, you know, the NHS) are too quick to blame racism for the fact that Black people are three times more likely to die during childbirth. We’re having this whole ridiculous ‘debate’ again because, over the last week, Reform leader Nigel Farage has redoubled his attacks on DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) initiatives. Those of us who don’t receive our talking points directly from Trump’s fascist America may know these better as EDI (Equality, Diversity and…

The foul racism of leading Israel mouthpieces in response to mosque shooting

Laura Loomer (screenshot). Laura Loomer is one of the best-known, most fanatical US Israel mouthpieces. She is also one of the closest to the Trump regime and has advocated feeding immigrants to alligators. She is also one of the most odious. And in response to the San Diego mosque shooting, she spewed out naked racism that would see her on trial had she β€” unthinkably β€” been a Muslim saying a quarter of the same about a synagogue attack. Two fascist gunmen murdered three Muslims in the attack. Many US ‘mainstream’ media outlets somehow managed to make it about a nearby…
