Zahra — a Lebanese citizen from the south of Lebanon — was on her balcony, pouring coffee, telling two journalists — one British, one Lebanese — what it is like to live in a town which has now become inside Israel’s yellow line of occupation, and why she can’t leave. Then BANG!! An Israeli drone had dropped a stun grenade — a flash-bang, the kind police lob to scatter riot crowds — around 30 metres from where they sat. On the recording, you can hear it detonate. You can hear her voice change: https://www.thecanary.co/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Guy-and-Mohamad-—-stun-grenade.wav The translation of the Arabic from the…

How the far right targeted City of Sanctuary with misinformation campaign

An exposé by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) has laid bare how City of Sanctuary, a charity that promotes empathy and compassion towards asylum seekers and refugees, became the target of a far right misinformation campaign. Charity workers and schools faced death threats, Islamaphobic and hateful abuse for an activity meant to spread love. When freelance journalist Charlotte Gill took issue with one of the charity’s harmless Valentine’s Day activities, the charity found itself at the centre of a media storm. As part of the Schools of Sanctuary programme, students wrote heart-shaped welcoming cards for refugees to be displayed at schools and…

On 2 June, the Department of Health and Social Care announced a £200m boost to the Transform prostate cancer treatment trial. However, Reform UK’s Zia Yusuf has chosen to get himself in a tizz about the fact that the potentially life-saving trial is targeting Black people. You know, because Black people suffer from a far higher risk of prostate cancer than white people. But the far-right home affairs spokesperson isn’t letting that little fact stop him. Following party leader Nigel Farage’s current talking point, Yusuf branded the trial as evidence of a “two-tier system” creating a systematic disadvantage for white people.…

As the climate crisis made itself all too evident across the UK with searingly high temperatures, climate activists occupied the lobby of the UK headquarters of Federated Hermes. They called on the company to stop funding the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). This is a massive ‘carbon bomb’ expected to generate 379 million tonnes of CO2 in its lifetime. The activists from Cut The Ties to Fossil Fuels entered the lobby of Federated Hermes handing out leaflets to staff and displaying banners saying “EACOP is a Carbon Bomb”. Outside they painted windows with the slogan “DROP EACOP” and stuck oily…
