Canary Catch Up: Pride month gets off to a horrifying start with Tip Toe and Rivals

Hello and welcome to Canary Catch Up. Each week, our resident telly addict Rachel Charlton-Dailey will bring us bang up to date with the shows she’s been obsessed with, what she’s hate-watching, and what she can’t wait to get stuck into. Trigger warning: This article contains discussion of homophobic hate crimes and the murder of a gay man. Please take care when reading. Pride 2026 I’ve been thinking a lot about pride and my local community this week. We, like many parts of the country, got a Reform council in May. For anyone who is disabled and isn’t straight, white and…

Reform — On 2 June, Nigel Farage stoked racial tensions in the UK by encouraging “pure, cold rage” from his followers. He made his speech in response to the sentencing of Henry Nowak’s murderer. And he said what he said despite Nowak’s family requesting the case not be used to sow division. Reform — Unbelievable Henry Nowak was a young white man who was stabbed to death by a young Sikh man. The case attracted attention because footage of the incident showed police officers had handcuffed Nowak despite the man explaining he’d been stabbed. Far-right politicians like Farage leaped on this…

US government weighs in on Nowak murder with the same old fascist lies

With grim predictability, the far-right US government has waded into the controversy surrounding the tragic death of Henry Nowak. A US State Department post on social media offered mealy-mouthed “condolences” to Henry’s family, though only after a tight string of fascist dogwhistles. In particular, the Trump administration repeated Farage’s ridiculous ‘two-tier’ anti-white policing claim. This is fitting, given the Reform UK leader shamelessly exploited Nowak’s murder to attack DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) initiatives. As the Canary previously pointed out, Farage clearly received this talking point directly from Trump’s fascist America. In the UK, ‘DEI’ is better known as ‘EDI’ (Equality, Diversity and…

The Israel lobby’s toxic attempt to silence solidarity with Palestine in the NHS

In a new review, notorious pro-Israel agitator John Mann has pushed for measures to silence NHS humanitarianism. The government and NHS have already pledged to implement them, including a crackdown on NHS staff members openly expressing solidarity with Palestinian people during Israel’s ongoing genocide. This is about Israel, not about ending racism Israel is a key junior partner to US billionaire–imperialism. The UK is a junior partner too, so giving Israel political and material support is just part of the deal. And for British political elites trying to get away with this shameful behaviour, consistent and widespread public outrage over Israel’s…

In January 2024, the EU established sanctions against individuals and entities supporting Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. It has now broadened these sanctions to also target members of Hamas’ Political Bureau, known as the ‘Politburo’. EU extends Hamas sanctions to include 10 political members According to the EU, the Politburo is a decision-making body, so its members are “responsible for violent actions carried out by Hamas.” 10 members now find themselves sanctioned. Measures include travel bans and the: freezing of all funds and economic resources belonging to, owned, held or controlled by, members of the Politburo. This decision comes as the Israeli…
