Reform just tried (and failed) to get the Good Law Project’s suit against it thrown out

  • Post author:

Today, 19 June, the High Court comprehensively ruled against Reform UK’s bid to throw out the Good Law Project’s (GLP) legal action against it. Back in 2024, before the general election, the GLP challenged all political parties to come clean about the data they held on members of the voting public. The action — backed by thousands of supporters — was part of the non-profit legal organisation’s #stoptargetingme campaign. Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) it’s a legal requirement for political parties to list and/or delete personal data when requested. And, with the GLP’s help, 1746 people did just…

Reform MPs show lack of humility yet again blaming Starmer for their own inability to win seat

  • Post author:
  • Post last modified:19 June 2026

Reform MP-hopeful Robert Kenyon lost in the Makerfield by-election by over 9,000 votes, which is likely to have left the far-right party feeling pretty sore. However, most who face such a defeat would look to where they didn’t hit the mark with voters — but not grievance-fueling Reform UK whose MPs and leader have come out blaming Starmer’s abysmal leadership for why they didn’t win enough votes to secure the seat. The bigoted party’s deputy leader came first, with Richard Tice telling the BBC that people who actually wanted to vote Reform wound up voting for Labour ‘because they had to’.…

Is Makerfield a tipping point, or just a speed bump?

  • Post author:

Andy Burnham’s back in Westminster after the Makerfield by-election. He’ll soon be Prime Minister. Which Andy turns up remains to be seen. And that, in part, will determine how much of a honeymoon he gets. If he guns for the privatised utilities and invests in council housing and public transport as he should, the establishment will target him. If he sits on the fence over Gaza, Palestine Action, or the EU, his coalition of voters will start to break apart. He’s one of the best communicators in politics – he can seem to offer everyone a little bit of hope. But…

The false narrative white supremacists have pushed about their own white riots

  • Post author:
  • Post last modified:20 June 2026

When the racist white riots broke out in Belfast, you’d have thought the sky had fallen in — or at least that a small army of migrants had turned up unannounced and started stealing everyone’s jobs, houses, and sense of “identity”, whatever that means. That’s the story the pernicious far-right and their cheerleaders in certain corners of the corporate media were peddling, anyway. It’s a narrative as old as it is ridiculous. Whenever things feel tough, blame the person who just arrived, the one who has less, the one who’s already vulnerable. Let’s be absolutely clear from the start: these were…

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has hit back at claims that she begged Trump for a photo, saying, ‘Italy and I never beg.’ Io e l’Italia non imploriamo mai. pic.twitter.com/sTpKlqWB67 — Giorgia Meloni (@GiorgiaMeloni) June 19, 2026 Two right-wingers are fighting. It must be a day ending with “day.” The backstory is that Trump was asked about his encounter with Meloni during the G7 summit in France. Trump claimed that Meloni ‘wanted to have a picture with me so badly’ and that he ‘felt sorry for her. According to POLITICO, the two leaders met several times at the three-day G7 gathering…

Christians use roses to remind chancellor the nation wants affordable energy

  • Post author:
  • Post last modified:19 June 2026

This morning, 6 members of Christian Climate Action attempted to deliver 100 paper roses to HM Treasury. It was to remind Rachel Reeves that one million people recently signed a petition asking the government to refuse approval for a new oilfield in UK waters. The UK government is soon to make a decision to approve or reject extraction at Rosebank, the biggest undeveloped oil field in the UK. The oil from Rosebank would be sold on the international open market. This means it would do nothing to lower UK energy bills or reduce price volatility. There’s an abundance of renewable energy…

UNISON’s Andrea Egan speaks out on union-busting at Leicester school

  • Post author:

UNISON general secretary Andrea Egan has insisted that she will ensure “the full force” of the union works to hold an academy trust to account for its union-busting at a Leicester school. Andrea Egan: ‘I will not tolerate this’ The Canary has been following developments closely since an academy special school in Leicester controversially suspended union rep Tom Barker. Amid accusations of union-busting, workers at the school overwhelmingly voted in favour of strike action. And their campaign has escalated in recent weeks. Egan, who joined the picket line with these striking workers on 4 June, highlighted her “profound solidarity” at UNISON’s…

Renowned journalist Guy Smallman is on the ground in Southern Lebanon for the Canary. Here is his first daily report. To understand the flare-up today, Friday 19 June, between the IDF and Hezbollah’s resistance fighters, it is first necessary to take a look at the location in Lebanon. Lebanon: Friday, 19 June The Ali al-Taher ridge in Lebanon is home to a complex system of tunnels which form the backbone of local infrastructure for Hezbollah’s elite Radwan brigade. Constructed largely in secrecy, the complex was officially declared in a video by the group’s military media unit in 2024. Described as an…

Following the Court of Appeal’s ruling on 15 June, declaring the proscription of Palestine Action to be lawful, Defend Our Juries is escalating its campaign of defiance. Ordinary people from across the UK are publishing videos professing membership of Palestine Action and inviting support for the group, risking jail sentences of up to 14 years. See examples of the videos here, here and here. Defend Our Juries says many more will follow shortly. The holding of cardboard signs, which has led to more than 3,400 arrests under section 13 of the Terrorism Act, leads to summary only trials and a maximum…

Lowe’s ‘Rape Gang Inquiry Report’ purposefully silenced brown survivors’ voices

  • Post author:

Content warning: this article contains discussion of child sexual abuse, exploitation, and the silencing of victims.  On 16 June, Rupert Lowe – leader of the extreme-right Restore Britain announced the publication of his ‘Rape Gang Inquiry Report’. Today, we amplify the account of survivors whose voices were excluded from the report to serve its racist, Islamophobic ends. Lowe’s report: ‘vulnerable, young white women’ As the Canary previously explained, Lowe’s report wholly lacked the methodological rigour necessary for such a study. Instead, it deployed Islamophobic conjecture to arrive at a foregone conclusion that group-based child sexual exploitation is: perpetrated by chiefly Pakistani…

Switzerland take control with ruthless late surge in Los Angles

  • Post author:

For more than an hour in Los Angeles, this World Cup group B clash drifted without rhythm. Switzerland had the ball, Bosnia-Herzegovina had the threat on the break, and neither side looked capable of landing a decisive punch. Then Murat Yakin turned to his bench and the tie flipped on its head. Johan Manzambi, just 20 years old and barely settled into the game, detonated the contest with a thunderous volley only 166 seconds after coming on. It was the spark Switzerland had been searching for, the moment that cracked open a stubborn match and set the tone for a 4-1 win…

Canada hit six as Qatar collapse in Vancouver World Cup match

  • Post author:
  • Post last modified:21 June 2026

Canada moved to the brink of the World Cup knockout stages with a commanding 6-0 win over nine‑man Qatar in Vancouver, a night defined by Jonathan David’s hat-trick, Cyle Larin’s early breakthrough and a serious injury to midfielder Ismael Kone. Jesse Marsch’s side were in control from the opening whistle, sharper in every duel and relentless in their pressure. Qatar, by contrast, unravelled quickly with two red cards, minimal attacking threat and long spells spent pinned inside their own half. The scoreline reflected the gulf in quality, but the mood inside BC Place shifted when Kone was stretchered off after a…

Polanski say it’s Greens VS Labour in Manchester Mayor race

  • Post author:
  • Post last modified:21 June 2026

Andy Burnham has won the Makerfield by-election, and that means Labour now has two new races to run: the first is for the position of Labour leader, and the second is for the mayor of Greater Manchester. The first will be restricted to Labour MPs, obviously, but the second will be open to any candidate who can raise the deposit. Such candidates may want to think twice before putting the money down, however, as the Greens are confident it’s going to be a two-horse race between them and Labour: We said it was Greens vs Reform in Gorton and Denton, and…

  • Post author:
